Frequently asked questions
Things to consider when choosing the correct size:
- Your period flow: If you have a light flow a small SELENACUP should be enough. Heavier periods may require a larger sized cup, so that they do not need to be emptied as frequently.
- Your pelvic floor muscles: There are two types of SELENACUP: SELENACUP and SELENACUP aktiv. The more active you are and the more toned your pelvic floor muscles, the harder your menstrual cup should be in order to create a seal and avoid leakage. To determine which type of SELENACUPis right for you, insert a clean finger into your vagina and squeeze your muscles as if you were trying to suck your finger up. If you feel a light tap or gentle squeeze, then the classic SELENACUP is the one for you. If however, you are able to squeeze your finger tightly for more seconds with your muscles, especially if you regularly do exercise such as biking, riding, pilates, belly dancing or ballet, then we recommend the SELENACUP aktiv.
- The location of your cervix: This will determine whether you need a longer or shorter menstrual cup. Insert a clean finger into your vagina until you come across something that feels like the tip of your nose or the tip of a penis. If you were able to fit a whole finger in before you felt your cervix (or you couldn’t feel anything as your cervix is higher then can be reached with your finger), you will need a large or medium cup. If you only fit half of your finger in, try a medium or small. If you can reach your cervix by only fitting in your first finger joint you need a small SELENACUP. If the smallest size is still too big for you, you can turn it round, so the ring is inside your cup or you can cut off the ring and file down the sides.

Wash your hands, then fold the SELENACUP and lead the folded side into the vagina. At the begining it works best under a warm shower where you can relax and you have plenty of water to moisten your cup. You can do this whilst standing with one leg on the bathtub, or crouching. Of course you can also try sitting down on the toilet.
The SELENACUP should be worn as high so you can’t feel it. Whether you insert it further up the cervix or slightly lower, is a matter of taste. In any case, you should still be able to reach your SELENACUP to be able remove it. Try turning the SELENACUP a little by the grooves below after inserting it to ensure that it has unfolded and can form a seal.
You’ll find the folding technique and position best suited to you after 2 or 3 periods at the latest. Water or silicone-friendly lubricant can facilitate the insertion.

Do not be discouraged if it does not work right away. Every body is different and practice is everything. Should you have problems in the begining such as leaking, discomfort or other problems, the size is often not the problem. Please try the follwing technique then:
Insert only the top half of your Selenacup into your vagina, allowing the bottom half to stick out – this is easiest either while standing, with one leg propped up, or while squatting. Allow the SELENACUP to unfold, controlling it where necessary by running your finger along the top. You can also use your finger to gently push away your vaginal wall to allow the cup to unfold fully. Once it has unfolded, use your pelvic muscles to slowly suck the SELENACUP up inside you while pushing the cup gently with your finger – push at an angle towards your tailbone rather than straight up. If inserted in this way, your SELENACUP should no longer leak and not cause you any pain. If you are still experiences leakages, discomfort or any other problems, don’t hesitate to write to us.
Try to relax first and never panic. If your pelvic floor muscles are relaxed, it will be far easier to remove the SELENACUP. Go under a hot shower, set your legs hip-width apart with your back to the wall and sit down into a deep squat. This will allow the cup to come down by itself a lot easier and make it easier for you to reach. Otherwise, clench your muscles as you would when going to the bathroom and gently pull the SELENACUP by its ring downward in a zigzag motion. Then, try using your longest finger to reach the top edge of the cup, or press the cup at the bottom grooves with two or three fingers to loosen the seal and then take it out.
If you still can not get it out please see your gynecologist.
In general, you should always insert your SELENACUP as far as you can still reach it to remove it again.
If you have issues with removing it more than once, please contact us. This may be due to you needing a different size, and we will be happy to help you.
Yes, the SELENACUP is ideal for sports and exercise! It provides 100% leak-free protection even when swimming or riding.
Yes, the SELENACUP can be safely worn during the day and overnight for up to 12 hours (with or without underwear). Simply make sure you empty your cup before going to bed, and as soon as you wake up.
The frequency with which you need to empty it depends on your menstrual flow. We suggest emtying the SELENACUP as often as you usally change tampons or pads. After short you will see how long you can wear your SELENACUP. At least after 12 hours you should empty it.
To remove your SELENACUP you have to release the seal at first. Wash your hand, than whilst squatting our sitting on the toilet eighter remove the seal by hooking in one finger in the upper ring or by squeezing the base of your SELENACUP with your index finger and thumb. It should come out without any effort. If you feel a resistance or ‘pull’, the seal has not been released.
Empty the contets of your cup into the toilet or sink.
During your period, it is enough to wash the SC with water and pH- neutral soap. If you are on a public toilet, you can wipe the SELENACUP with toilet paper and a small amount of water from a water bottle you brought along. In other cases, you can use your urine which is usally sterile and thus very suitable. After its purchase and before each period, the SELENACUP should be cleaned more thoroughly. Insert the SELENACUP into the enclosed cleaning container, fill it with water, place the lid loosely on it and set it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes at 800-1000 watts. You can also sterilize the SC in a pot. Bring plenty of water to a boil on the stove and let boil for 2-3 minutes. Make sure that the SELENACUP is not at the bottom of the pot when it is boiling as this can damage it. You can, for example, put the cup into a whisk. Do not leave the pot unattended.
For discoloration, tooth tablets may be used. Place the SELENACUP in a cup of water with the tablets overnight and then rinse well with water afterwards.
The small holes on the rim can be cleaned with clean interdental brushes. If you live in an area with very calcareous water, you can put a drop of vinegar into the water. This stops any lime scale forming on the cup.
Always make sure you keep the cup as clean as possible, so the vaginal flora remains in equilibrium.
To ensure the longest possible lifespan, store your SELENACUP in the breathable carrying pouch. It is made from cotton and allows air to circulate.
After an infection or inflammation, it is particularly important to thoroughly clean the SELENACUP to prevent reinfection. Boil the SELENACUP in water for 20 minutes, and repeat this process 3 times. This works the best by putting the SELENACUP in a whisk to minimize damage to the silicone. Never leave the pot unattended. Between the cooking times, let the cup air dry. This will kill the spores. Also wash the storing pouch at at least 60 degrees.
